OVERVIEW:
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program began in October 2000, when
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated US$210 million to the University
of Cambridge, making it the greatest single grant to a UK university. The first
group of scholars arrived in October of 2001.
The objective of the Gates Cambridge Initiative is to create a global
network of future leaders dedicated to improving people's lives. It intends to
accomplish this purpose by selecting excellent scholars, providing them with
financial and non-financial assistance at one of the world's top universities, and facilitating community building both within and beyond Cambridge.

LEVEL OF STUDY:
Ph.D., MSc, or MLitt, or a one-year postgraduate
course in any subject offered at the University.
NUMBER OF AWARDS:
About 80 every year.
AWARD BENEFITS:
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at
Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.
Core components
the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
a maintenance allowance for a single student (£17,848 for 12 months at
the 2021-22 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) – for Ph.D.
scholars the award is for up to 4 years.
Airfare at start and end of course.
Inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge
Discretionary components
Academic development funding - for attending conferences and courses,
ranging from £500 to £2,000 depending on the length of your course.
The family allowance is worth up to £10,120 for one child and £14,440
for two or more children (2021-22 rate). A partner does not receive any
funding.
Fieldwork — as part of your Ph.D., you may apply to keep your standard
maintenance allowance while on fieldwork (the Trust does not fund other
fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).
Maternity/Paternity money – if you need it, you can request to take a
break from your studies for up to 6 months while still receiving your
maintenance allowance.
Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties
Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship?
The Trust maintains the right to reduce or not provide the usual
maintenance allowance if you get an income from an employer or have another
substantial scholarship. If you receive any support for your Cambridge degree,
please notify the Trust as soon as possible.

ELIGIBILITY:
You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if
you are:
• a citizen of any country outside the United
Kingdom.
• applying to pursue one of the following
full-time residential courses of study: Ph.D., MSc or MLitt, or a one-year
postgraduate course.
Courses that are NOT eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:
• Any Undergraduate degree such as BA
(undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
• Business Doctorate
• Master of Business (MBA)
• Master of Finance (MFin)
• PGCE
• MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
• Graduate Course in Medicine
• Part-time degrees
• Non-degree courses
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Applicants submit their application for admission
and funding (Gates Cambridge and other funding) via the University’s Graduate
Application Portal. To be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship you must
complete the section to apply for admission to a course and a College place and
the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section.
DEADLINES:
13 October 2021 (for US citizens resident in the USA) and early December 2021 or early
January 2022 depending on the course (for all other eligible applicants).
